Global cooperation projects between industry and academia

Pusan National University has opened a new chapter in the history of global cooperation projects between industry and academia by making a dedicated effort to strengthen cooperation between the University and industries, and between the University and regional governments, and by transforming the University into a growth engine of regional development. As the summit of these efforts, PNU opened the International Industrial-Academic Cooperation Research Center to specialize in regional strategic industries, next-generation growth engine industries, and globally advanced studies.

In May 2006, PNU collaborated with the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB), a world-renowned research institute in the field of bio-engineering, to establish the PNU-IGB International Joint Research Center at its Miryang Campus. With this move, PNU presented a new model for international joint research and industrial-academic cooperation. In addition, PNU established the PNU-IFAM International Joint Research Center with Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing and Advanced Materials (IFAM), which has become a highly regarded center in the field of parts, materials, and manufacturing technologies. Also launched was the PNU-IDMT International Joint Research Center at the Busan Campus, in which PNU joined hands with Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT). PNU is actively promoting joint research activities with these research institutes.

PNU researchers and the UK’s Rolls-Royce, a global engine system corporation, have also engaged in joint technical research, producing "ultra-efficient, ultra-light, next generation heat exchangers." Since then, the two companies have cooperated in full-scale joint R&D projects. The outcome of their joint technical research will be utilized in aircraft, vessels, and energy-related products manufactured by Rolls-Royce. The partnership between PNU and Rolls-Royce is an example of international cooperation that can contribute to the development of top-tier scientists and technicians. PNU students have the opportunity for internships at Rolls-Royce headquarters in the UK. One PNU student who completed the internship has already received a full-time position with Rolls-Royce headquarters in the UK.
